Wednesday AM Sports Stories

Paul Millsap poured in 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Hawks clipped the shorthanded Cavaliers 109-101 in Atlanta. LeBron James missed the game due to a sore left knee. Kyrie Irving returned from a two-game absence and collected 35 points, six rebounds and nine assists for Cleveland in its second straight loss. Kevin Love scored seven points before leaving with back spasms.

Ohio State and Alabama square off in the semifinals at the Sugar Bowl in the first ever college football playoffs tomorrow night. Both teams are 12-and-1. The winner moves on to face the winner of Florida State versus Oregon in the Rose Bowl. The National Championship Game will be played on January 12th.

After Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said he would not hesitate to kick out any player who acts irresponsible, Johnny Manziel issued a public apology for his own behavior. He says it is time he grows up and acted responsibly and not like a jackass.
Less than 24 hours later, Manziel became the center of the social media world again when an Instagram video was posted of him wishing LeBron James happy birthday in Miami. There was loud music and several people surrounding Manziel in the video, suggesting he was at a party.

Browns GM Ray Farmer said at his last press conference of the year that actions speak louder than words, but he still believes Manziel has the competitive spirit to become a legitimate quarterback in the league.

Browns fans are being asked to decide the fate of an infamous Cleveland Browns jersey. The Brokaw agency is hosting a Facebook poll to decide what to do with the jersey at its office with the names of all 22 starting quarterbacks for the Browns since 1999. The options for the jersey include keeping it until the Browns make the playoffs, auctioning it for charity or burning it.

Jesus Stolen from Nativity

Willoughby Police have issued a bolo for Baby Jesus. Somebody abducted a ceramic Christ Child from a nativity scene outside the Immaculate Conception Church on Monday. The 25 year-old figurine is 2 feet long and white in color. Police ask for a call from anyone who knows anything.

Mentor Unveils Budget

Mentor officials revealed their proposed budget and it is more than 3 million dollars higher than 2014. In it is money to pay for the Heisley Road widening phase 3, the finishing of the Plaza Boulevard extension to Tyler, and other resurfacing. Also lots of stormwater drainage projects.

Bad Check Ring Caught in Willoughby

Three men were arrested for using fake checks to buy gift cards at the Willoughby Target store on Euclid Avenue. Arriving officers stopped a car leaving the store with the three men inside and officers found false ID on two of the men, who are all from Cleveland. They also found a laptop computer, an ID scanner and bogus checks in the car. They think the men did the same thing at Walmart, Giant Eagle and Toys R Us and at various locations across the state.

McCormack Pleads Not Guilty

Don McCormack, the fired long-time Star Beacon Sports Editor and Jefferson Area High School coach, pleaded not guilty yesterday to sex-crime charges involving student athletes. He did not look at several teenagers and young people wearing Jefferson High jackets sitting in the courtroom. After being forced to resign from coaching because of accusations several more girls came forward to tell their stories of inappropriate sexual conduct.

Flu Serious in NE Ohio

The flu continues to take its toll on northeast Ohio. Health officials say three more flu-related deaths were reported in the week before Christmas, raising the total this season to six. More than 340 people were hospitalized over the past two weeks with the virus. Vaccinations and hand washing are recommended to fight the flu.

Troopers Watch for Drunks

Be aware that the Ashtabula Highway Patrol Post will be out in force today watching for drunk drivers New Year’s Eve. They will ticket anybody they see driving erratically but say sometimes just the sight of a lot of patrol cars is enough to keep people driving slow.

Cavs visit Hawks; LeBron and Blatt not getting along?

The Cleveland Cavaliers visit the Atlanta Hawks tonight at 7:30.

Coverage begins at 7 o’clock on Magic 102.5FM and ESPN 970 WFUN.

The Cavaliers sit at 18-12, just 3.5 games back of the Chicago Bulls for first place in the Central Division.

The Hawks share the Southeast Division lead with the Washington Wizards. They each have records of 22-8.

The Cavs look to rebound following Sunday’s 23-point loss to the Detroit Pistons. They expect to have Kyrie Irving back in the lineup after he has missed two games with a knee bruise.

Meanwhile, rumors keep swirling that LeBron James and head coach David Blatt do not see eye-to-eye. James yesterday had the chance to end them, but he lukewarmly showed support for Blatt instead.

Tuesday AM Sports Stories

Browns coach Mike Pettine called the team’s quarterback situation muddy in talking about next year’s prospects. On the roster as 2014 comes to an end are Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel, Connor Shaw and Tyler Thigpen. And Pettine says it looks like they will all compete in training camp. He said that Hoyer is due to become a free agent and Johnny Manziel’s sample size in the short time he was on the field wasn’t encouraging.

Rumors are swirling around about Cavaliers head coach David Blatt. Multiple outlets have reported LeBron James and Blatt aren’t seeing eye-to-eye. James had the chance to put an end to the rumors on Monday, but instead showed lukewarm support for the coach.

The Cavaliers are on the road taking on the Hawks tonight at Philips Arena. The Hawks are 22-and-8.

Today is the championship game in the Brush Holiday boys basketball tournament and the Richmond Heights Spartans will play Brush in the final.

In the NXY LVL Hoops Tournament in Tennessee, Mentor lost to Christ Presbyterian 69 to 54. Mentor disappointed after a 5 game win streak.

NBA fans have till January 19th to cast ballots for the starters in the All-Star Game. And as of the end of last week LeBron James is the number one vote getter. The Cavs star is leading the balloting for the Eastern Conference team with more than 553 thousand votes.

The OSU men play basketball today against Iowa and the game can be heard live starting at 12:30Pm on ESPN 970 WFUN.

Jim Harbaugh is heading back to college football. Harbaugh will be introduced as the head coach of Michigan today. Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers played their final game Sunday, and this is Harbaugh’s first non-winning season since joining the Niners in 2011. He led them to three straight NFC title games and the Super Bowl during the 2012 season. Harbaugh was the head coach at Stanford from 2007 until 2010 before making the jump to the NFL. He played quarterback at Michigan from 1983-86.

Man Accidentally Shoots and Wounds Girlfriend

A Twinsburg man says he didn’t know the gun was loaded when he accidentally pulled the trigger setting his handgun down on a table in his girlfriend’s kitchen. The gun went off and the bullet hit his 20 year-old girlfriend, grazing her in the head. A relative rushed the woman to a hospital and her injuries are not life threatening.
