Bank Robbery Suspect Arraigned

56-year-old Thomas J. Wortman of Ashtabula, who is accused of robbing the FirstMerit Bank at 888 Lake Avenue earlier this week, was arraigned in Municipal Court Wednesday. Wortman faces a felony robbery charge and misdemeanor charges of petty theft and menacing following Monday’s robbery. Police received the call and responded just after 2 p.m. Monday, and though most area banks were closed for Columbus Day, this bank branch was open, according to Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell. He went into the bank and allegedly indicated to one of the staff there that he had a bomb, but Chief Stell said Tuesday [quote] “Nobody saw he had a bomb. We didn’t find a bomb.” [end quote] Wortman reportedly did leave the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash, but was arrested soon after near the McDonald’s on Lake Avenue. Police did not find any weapons or expolosives on his person. Bond was set at $10,000 cash, surety or property, according to court records.
