Browns Woe and Sixteen

The headline reads; Woe and Sixteen. After a genuinely valiant effort against the 2nd seed in the AFC playoffs, the Cleveland Browns joined the 2008 Lions as the only teams in NFL history to go 0-16 when they failed to find a way to beat the 13-and-3 AFC North Champion Pittsburgh Steelers in a 28-24 loss on Sunday. The Browns season was encapulated in their final drive late in the fourth quarter, as rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer scrambled to avoid the Steelers pass rush and threw a fourth-down pass for a strike to Corey Coleman– which would have put the Browns around the Pittsburgh ten yard line with time on the clock and a chance to take the lead– but it slipped right through Coleman’s fingers and fell incomplete. Owner Jimmy Haslam maintains that coach Hue Jackson will be back next season to coach the 2018 Browns. Kizer finished with 314 passing yards and two touchdowns to Rashard Higgins, but also threw his NFL-leading 22nd interception.

Fentanyl Leader in OH Opioid Deaths

In 2016, the surgical grade synthetic opioid fentanyl was the leading contributor to drug overdose deaths for the first time in both Lake County and the state of Ohio. The medical anesthetic– 50 to 100 times more powerful than heroin– contributed to 70 percent of Lake County’s 2016 overdose deaths and more than 58 percent of the state’s total. Fentanyl analogues are nothing new to Lake County. Last year, Crime Lab Chemistry and Toxicology Supervisor Doug Rhode was the first to discover a case in Ohio. The drug was soon found around Ohio and elsewhere—it was identified as one of the drugs that contributed to the death of the musician Prince. Other fentanyl analogues also surfaced in Lake County for the first time in 2016. More new analogues have been found this year. The crime lab noted that heroin, fentanyl and carfentanil powders all look the same, and that many opioid victims are not aware that heroin has been laced with fentanyl.
